Hip Replacement Scar care
Surgery heals the joint. But what about hip replacement scar care? When tissue is cut during surgery, the body lays down scar tissue quickly — often irregular and restrictive rather than smooth. Left untreated, this can quietly limit movement, cause compensations elsewhere (think back, knee, opposite hip), and slow confidence in exercise whilst causing local pain and numbness.
A Case Study
A recent case: A patient came to me 8 weeks post hip replacement. The scar looked healthy — thin, flat, pink — but underneath, density had started to build up around the end of the scar and surrounding muscles. Moving the scar caused a pulling sensation, and it was affecting her gait and rehab exercises.
What we did: Manual scar mobilisation, frictional techniques, lymphatic drainage + sensation work. All aimed to improve tissue quality. Osteopathic treatment of the hip, pelvis and lumbar spine — because the body doesn’t recover in isolation Home care advice from 8 weeks post-op (once cleared by the surgical team), including scar massage and product recommendations to promote healing.
The result: improved range of motion, better quality movement, and — just as important — confidence back in her body.
